Alex Slate At the age of seventeen, Alex Slate is already a veteran of the music industry and well established in her chosen career. The past year has been incredibly exciting for this young singer/songwriter. She has performed well over a hundred live gigs at Toronto area cafes, clubs and record stores and has been writing "sit back and take notice" new material at a remarkable pace. Her lyrics are insightful and poetic, her melodies captivating and sophisticated. As a young child at home with her family, she was exposed to a wide variety of music. Her mother, Joanne, a children's performer and a kindergarten teacher who makes music central in her program, entertained at local libraries and kids' parties. Often Slate would be sitting on Mom's lap during her performances. Slate performed on five recordings as a child, including CD's with such well-known artists as Sharon, Lois and Bram, Jack Grunsky, David Suzuki, and Jane Siberry. In addition to her first three-song CD, Half Full, she sings a duet with Jason Wilson on the recently released CD, Dark Corners, by Toronto reggae band, Tabarruk. Slate is a charismatic performer, touching her audience with her sweet, powerful voice and her poignant lyrics. If you haven't seen her perform live, you must put it at the top of your "to do" list.
